About This Park

Tucked into the rugged hills of southwestern Uganda, along the edge of the Albertine Rift near the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Africa's most extraordinary wilderness destinations. The park covers roughly 321 square kilometres and ranges in elevation from about 1,160 to over 2,600 metres above sea level, and its dense, ancient rainforest is split across four main trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. It earned its name because the forest is thick, dark, swampy, and genuinely difficult to move through, which gives visitors a real sense of stepping into untouched wilderness. It was gazetted as a national park in 1991 and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, and today it stands as one of the last great strongholds of biodiversity on the continent
