The park's recovery over the past decade and a half is one of the great conservation success stories in the region. Species once wiped out entirely have been reintroduced, and white rhinos, lions, elephants, and giraffes now roam its revitalized plains, with 30 white rhinos translocated from South Africa in 2021 followed by another 70 in June 2025. Following the reintroduction of lions in 2015 and both eastern black and southern white rhinos in the years since, Akagera now holds thriving populations of the full Big Five, alongside elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, and leopard, while its waterways teem with hippo and large Nile crocodiles. In total, the park is home to more than 8,000 wild animals, including big herds of zebra, cheetah, roan antelope, and eland, along with primates such as baboons, vervet monkeys, and blue monkeys. Akagera is also considered an important birding area, offering the chance to spot endangered species like the papyrus gonolek and shoebill, alongside weavers, egrets, and kingfishers, with birding possible on game drives, guided nature walks, and boat safaris on Lake Ihema
